Common issues and FAQ

1. I am using Windows as a host system. I can only select 32-bit guest systems but the Nubuntu VM is 64-bit. How can I fix this?

James Keegans: In Windows 10 the virtual machine may not display when started. If this is the case, power off the machine and check under settings> general that the version you are using is Ubuntu 64 bit. If there are no 64 bit options you will need to change your BIOS settings. In order to do this go to start> settings> update and security> recovery and then, under advanced setup, restart now. This will restart your PC in advanced mode. From here select troubleshoot> advanced options> UEFI firmware setting and again restart. From here you can change your BIOS settings. On the second page of the BIOS settings is an option 'Intel virtualisation technology'. Set this to enabled and save your changes. Restart your PC and be sure to change to Ubuntu 64 in Oracle before turning on the machine.

2. Error: Failed to open image for writing due to wrong permissions (VERR_VD_IMAGE_READ_ONLY). Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005). Unzipping documents.

James Keegans: If you receive this error when trying to start a VM, you may have forgotten to unzip the files. Go to the directory where the zip file is saved, right click on the file, and extract all. Then double click on the VM icon in the new directory to launch.
